Tuxedo Cake Costco Recipe

Tuxedo Cake Costco Recipe

It’s time to talk cake again! I’ve reviewed the Costco Kirkland Signature Tiramisu Cake and the Strawberry Shortcake. Today, I’m reviewing Costco’s Tuxedo Cake. At this risk of spoiling the rest of this review, I think this is the best cake that Costco sells!

The Kirkland Signature Tuxedo Cake can be found in the refrigerator in the bakery section at Costco. The item number is 23133.

First off, this cake does not taste like it came from a grocery store! I eat a lot of desserts, so I feel like I know my cake well. Costco’s Tuxedo Cake is nothing like those cakes you buy at your local grocery store. You know what I’m talking about – the ones that are dry and have artificial-tasting icing. This cake is rich, chocolatey and you can definitely tell it’s made from high-quality ingredients.

You only need a small slice of the cake to sink into sweet, chocolatey heaven. It consists of a few different layers. The bottom layer is a dense, bold-flavored chocolate cake. On top of that is a rich, creamy chocolate mousse with brownie pieces in it. Next up is a vanilla/white chocolate cream mousse. Sandwiched above that is another layer of chocolate cake. Topping it all off is a thick, smooth dark chocolate ganache. The top of the cake is decorated with cocoa nibs and chocolate sticks, which makes it very visually appealing on top of being extremely delicious.

I honestly love this cake so much that I’d rather have it than a cake from one of the top-notch bakeries that we have in my city! Overall, the Tuxedo Cake is sweet, rich and decadent. Some people might find that it’s too much, but personally, I can’t get enough of it and would happily have it as my birthday cake. It’s not too rich for me and I’m crazy about the smooth, creamy mousse!

At $16.99 Canadian, the price for the Tuxedo Cake is the same as for the Tiramisu Cake, which in my opinion is very reasonable. I could easily see this cake serving 10 – 12 people (with reasonably-sized slices), so that’s pretty inexpensive on a per-serving basis.

Better Than Costco Tuxedo Cake Recipe

I’ll let you in on a secret. We’ve purchased a chocolate cake for $48 Canadian from a fancy local bakery – it’s one of their signature items. It’s really good, but not $30 better than this cake! Not even close! The Costco Tuxedo Cake tastes just as good as the fancy bakery cake to me.

The Tuxedo Cake is as convenient as a product can be! It comes packaged in a rectangular plastic container that you can easily reseal after opening. The cake slices super easily and freezes wonderfully.

If you love this cake like I do, don’t feel like you need to wait for a special occasion to buy it. Just cut it into individual slices and then put the slices in sealed bags or containers in your freezer. I find a slice needs about half an hour to thaw before I want to enjoy it!

Chocolate Tuxedo Mousse Cake, Easy & Quick Dessert

1/16th of the cake (a 77-gram slice or approximately half of what you see in the photo above) contains 280 calories, 17 grams of fat, 29 grams of carbohydrates, four grams of protein and 190 milligrams of sodium. That’s obviously not great, especially for such a small amount of cake, but I don’t think it’s any worse than your average cake.

One area where I can criticize the Kirkland Signature Tuxedo Cake a bit is the ingredients list – it’s long and full of artificial/chemical-sounding stuff. I have the recipe for the fancy bakery cake that I mentioned above and it’s pretty much just a list of things that you would expect: butter, sugar, cocoa, cream, etc. The worst things in it were small amounts of vegetable oil and corn syrup. There wasn’t anything listed that you would have to search for on Google to figure out what it is. I can’t say this is the case for all of the Tuxedo Cake ingredients, unfortunately.

I can’t say enough good things about this cake! You have to try it. If you hate it, just send your leftovers to me and I’ll gladly finish it!

Hi, I’m Natalie! is a website for Costco-loving foodies like me. isn’t associated with Costco in any way though. I help Costco fans find the best stuff in their local warehouses. I also provide useful information about products, like cooking instructions (in case you threw out your package by accident like I have countless times!) and nutrition information.Truly one of the best cakes I’ve ever made. This tuxedo cake has four layers of moist chocolate cake, two layers of fluffy white cake and alternating whipped dark and white chocolate ganache between every layer. She’s a real beauty.

This cake has been on my to do list for a long time! My first inspiration came from the incredible costco tuxedo cake. This is not a copycat, but a copycat version of that is also on my to do list. The second source of inspiration is the blondery cake.

I came across that beauty when planning out Zara’s birthday cake part and I knew I had to make something with a ton of layers like that. What an absolutely stunning cake!

So when I did my research on tuxedo cakes, there was no one right answer on what exactly a tuxedo cake is and where it originated. The consensus is that it’s basically a cake that’s black and white.

To keep it a true black and white, most people incorporate some form of dark chocolate and some form of white chocolate in the recipe. It should also visually be black and white.

A lot of recipes include a dark or a white chocolate mousse but that wouldn’t hold up very well with all the layers in this cake.

So my tuxedo cake consists of four dark chocolate cake layers, two vanilla white cake layers and alternating layers of whipped dark and white chocolate ganache.

Tuxedo

I wanted this to be a dark and rich chocolate cake so I went with my chocolate cake from my cookbook Frosted and subbed half the dutch process cocoa powder for black cocoa powder.

I also wanted the vanilla cake to be the same texture but also more white in color. So I used my 4 inch vanilla recipe but I subbed the butter for oil so it has the same texture as the chocolate cake. Then I subbed the whole egg for two egg whites and the milk for heavy cream.

Ganache is one of the easiest frostings to make! The most important part is just getting the ratio of chocolate to heavy cream right. Dark chocolate is going to need a lot more cream than white chocolate to get them to the same consistency.

First you’ll heat the cream on the stove, then pour it on top of the white chocolate and cover. Do the same with the dark chocolate. Let them rest for up to five minutes, then stir gently until all the chocolate is melted and smooth.

Now you’re going to let them cool completely to room temperature. If it’s warm in the house, you may want to even refrigerate them for 5-10 minutes intervals, mixing between each interval.

I wanted to make the layers of cake into a pattern instead of just alternating. Since I have double the amount of chocolate cake as I do white cake, I made the pattern symmetrical so I did:

-

It would look weird to have two chocolate cake layers next to each other but when you alternate the ganaches like that too, the white goes between the chocolate cake layers and it then looks so scrumptious!

You will have some leftover white chocolate ganache if you frost it like I did. The recipe makes enough to do a full crumb coat and generous frost on the outside but I got lazy…

You can crumb coat it with the white chocolate ganache and then frost with the dark chocolate ganache, vise versa, marble it, or just mix the two together and get a pale chocolate ganache frosting.

This is a pretty tall cake and soft cake layers so I find it easier to assemble if I freeze my cake layers ahead of time.

To freeze the cake layers, I let them cool almost to room temperature. Then wrap them in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer bag.

Remove them when you’re ready to frost! If they need to be trimmed, remove them a little sooner, let them thaw for 15 minutes
