Recipe Homemade Baked Beans Crock Pot
Crockpot baked beans: Your new favorite dish for summer cookouts! This recipe is the easy way to make baked beans – made right in your slow cooker with canned beans, bacon, brown sugar and ketchup. Full of flavor, 10 minutes of prep time and no heating up the house!
It wasn’t until my early twenties that I tried making my own. And while I still cherish the canned stuff, I absolutely love my homemade baked beans!

I do cheat to make these super easy, so they are semi-homemade – like my Pineapple BBQ Crockpot Baked Beans are, too. I definitely use the cooked beans from a can, because to me, cooking dried beans in the crock freaks me out (too many bad stories about undercooked beans from friends and family). Doesn’t mean they are any less delicious though!

1) Add beans, 2) onion, bacon, brown sugar and 3) ketchup to a crockpot. 4) Stir well, then 5) cook on LOW.
But they’re obviously mainly a popular BBQ side dish. So serve them up with some pulled pork in a bun or with BBQ chicken! And by the way, my Crockpot Mac and Cheese recipe and my coleslaw are other sides that goes so well with typical BBQ or cookout food.

Traditional, old fashioned baked beans recipes typically involve soaking dried beans overnight until they’re tender, then bringing them to a simmer in a large pot with a sweet and savory sauce, and finally, baking them right in the oven. Everyone’s “sauce” is a bit different and many include apple cider vinegar or even apple juice as well.

Feel free to swap out any kind of beans you’d like, or even add an additional can of beans to this recipe (but I like my beans a little saucier!) Black beans would also work very well in this recipe.

You don’t have to use dark brown sugar, but I find that it adds more flavor than any other kind of sugar (including light brown sugar). Please know that dark or light brown sugar or coconut sugar will work well.
The Best Baked Beans From Scratch
For sweeter baked beans, use a sweeter BBQ sauce. I love using spicy bbq sauce (Stubb’s is my fav) because I think it adds a nice contrast to the sweetness of the recipe.

Baked beans are one of my go-to recipes. They work equally well as a side dish during hot summer months as they do during chilly winter months. Because these beans can be served warm or cold, it makes them incredibly versatile and I love that I can easily change up the recipe to customize it for different occasions. I share more on that below.
Healthy Baked Beans (instant Pot + Slow Cooker)
This recipe is a lot like my crockpot refried beans recipe in that it’s a little bit of a misnomer in that those beans are not refried just like these beans are not baked.
Recently I googled baked beans and was shocked to find that the first eight or so recipes I looked at all used canned beans. I mean, why? Making them from scratch is SO easy you guys, there is literally no reason not to make them yourself.
This homemade baked beans recipe is the only recipe you’ll ever need. While the beans aren’t “baked” they are slow cooked which is exactly what you do in the oven. The good news is you won’t need to soak the beans or anything, just a quick rinse and they go straight in the crockpot.

What I love about making them from scratch is that I control the ingredients. Sometimes I want the beans to be a little sweeter so I’ll add a tablespoon or two more of the brown sugar. Maybe I’m making them for a BBQ and I want them to have a bit more of a smoky flavor so I add in a half teaspoon or so of liquid smoke.
While I’m a big fan of baked beans anyway I can get them, I love making slow cooker baked beans because it’s a great way to make them all year round.
There are just six main ingredients in this slow cooker baked beans recipe plus salt, pepper and water. Optional ingredients include bacon, liquid smoke, and hamburger. See my notes in the Variations You Might Want To Try section below.
