Recipe For Creamed Spinach Without Cream
This Healthy Creamed Spinach is a lightened-up version of a holiday classic! It’s just as rich and flavorful as traditional creamed spinach, but keto-friendly, low-carb, and packed with veggies!
I used to love traditional creamed spinach. I grew up getting it from this local chicken shop in New York and it was a holiday staple at family get-togethers! It tasted

But I knew it was loaded with junk. So, I set out on a mission to create a creamed spinach recipe that tasted just as good as the real thing, but that was made up of better-for-you ingredients!
Healthy Creamed Spinach (vegan & Paleo!)
Well, I’m sure you’ll be excited to know that I’ve done it. This healthy creamed spinach recipe is packed with greens and made with healthier ingredients like cashew milk and arrowroot flour instead of heavy cream, sour cream, and regular flour.
It’s rich, perfectly creamy, so flavorful, AND it’s good for you! Such a win! I love serving it with our Thanksgiving Turkey, or on any old weeknight with Spatchcock Chicken, Seared Steak, or Gluten-Free Chicken Nuggets!
You can use frozen spinach, but I prefer the texture of fresh spinach. It’s a little more firm than frozen and holds up nicely in the cream sauce.
Creamed Spinach ( The Ultimate Spinach Lover's Side Dish)
If you do decide to use frozen spinach, make sure you thaw it and squeeze out as much moisture as possible before incorporating it into the sauce.
After the flour is added and you’ve simmered the sauce, it should be thick enough that it can coat the back of a spoon before you add the spinach. If it is still too thin, I recommend simmering lonoger first, then adding more flour, very little bits at a time, if needed.
Normally creamed spinach wouldn’t be classified as a particularly healthy side dish. But this recipe definitely is! Traditional creamed spinach is loaded up with heavy ingredients like heavy cream and sour cream. This healthy creamed spinach recipe is made using cashew milk for a lightened up version that’s just as delicious!
The Only Creamed Spinach Recipe You'll Need

Spinach and cream cheese, mixed with garlic, parmesan, butter, and spices combine to create a decadent side that’s a total crowd pleaser. This creamy dip is naturally gluten-free, family friendly, and super easy to make. The best part? It’s ready in just 15 minutes!
Creamed spinach is a classic dish found on restaurant menus and family dinner tables everywhere. It’s great any time of year, but is also popular around the holidays. Simple, easy creamed spinach is typically made with either milk or heavy cream, cheese, and spinach. But you can dress it up with herbs, cream cheese, parmesan, and even nutmeg!
The problem with most traditional creamed spinach recipes is that they include flour, to thicken the mixture, which means that it’s not gluten free or keto friendly. I’ve also found that this step is unnecessary – you can actually make a rich, creamy sauce without any flour.
Easy Creamed Spinach
Which is why, I created this keto creamed spinach recipe with no flour! It’s so simple to make, you only need seven ingredients, 15 minutes, and one pot to whip it up.

Without flour, this recipe has barely any carbs and is naturally gluten free. One serving of this keto creamy spinach is only 4 grams of net carbs. It’s fancy enough for the holidays or special occasions but easy enough for a busy weeknight! You can’t go wrong with this low carb spinach recipe.
If you’ve never had low carb creamed spinach, it’s similar to spinach dip, but you get to devour it like it’s part of the meal. It’s one of my favorite ways to use spinach, and the cream cheese + parmesan thicken into a rich cream sauce that everyone will love.
Steakhouse Creamed Spinach (just Like The Original)
Easy keto creamed spinach with cream cheese requires seven basic ingredients plus salt and pepper. Three of the main ingredients are dairy products, but don’t worry! You can make this recipe dairy-free and vegan too (see variations below). For the detailed ingredients list and nutritional information, see the recipe card below.
Sauté Aromatics: In a large skillet, sauté the butter and onion over medium heat, cook until translucent. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant. This will keep the garlic from burning.
Simmer With Cream: Add the cream and turn to medium-high heat. Once your low carb cream spinach mixture comes to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 3-4 minutes until the cream starts to thicken.

Stir In Cheese: Add the cream cheese and grated parmesan and stir to combine then cook until the sauce starts to thicken up.
Yes! Spinach is keto friendly. Leafy green veggies are an important part of a keto diet, and spinach especially is very low in carbs. 1 cup of spinach has 1.1 grams of total carbs and only 0.4 grams of net carbs. This versatile dish is the perfect way to enjoy spinach when you’re looking for a low carb option!

Given the popularity of this great side dish, you might be wondering “is creamed spinach healthy?” The answer is – it depends! This keto creamed spinach recipe is made with natural ingredients, is low carb, high in protein, and contains antioxidants from the spinach – making it much healthier than most creamed spinach recipes. However, it is also high in fat and calories – so it’s still best to enjoy this dish in moderation!
Perfect Creamed Spinach — Cooks Without Borders
Traditional creamy spinach is not keto friendly because it will typically have flour added. But this recipe is keto friendly as it contains no flour and has only 4 grams of net carbs!
This low cal creamed spinach will last in the refrigerator for up to 5 days in an airtight container. Since it’s made with heavy cream and cream cheese, it’s best enjoyed within the first 3 days!
You can meal prep this recipe by making it 1-2 days ahead of time, and refrigerating it until it’s ready to serve. When you’re ready to serve, reheat on the stove top or in the oven until heated through. Top with extra parmesan and mozzarella cheese if desired!
Creamed Spinach Recipe (easy In 15 Minutes!)
To store in the fridge: let the cream cheese spinach mixture cool to room temperature. Transfer it to an airtight container or freezer bag and then refrigerate until ready to eat. Reheat on the stovetop, in the microwave, or in the oven at 300 degrees Fahrenheit until its hot!
Unfortunately no, I don’t recommend freezing this garlic cream spinach, as the creamy texture of the dish will get denatured (the sauce will separate and become watery) when frozen and then thawed. While it’s still safe to eat after being frozen and defrosted, it won’t taste nearly as good!
