Valentine's Day heart sugar cookies with royal icing are the perfect festive treat to make this year. They are golden brown and crisp on the outside, but soft and tender on the inside, and decorated with cute love messages using a meringue-based royal icing. They are seriously the best gourmet holiday cookies to gift to your loved ones.
Whenever a holiday rolls around, my go to cookie is always sugar cookies. They are just so easy to make and fun to decorate for whatever occasion that it is. Once you have made the Valentine's Day heart sugar cookies and allowed them to cool completely, you are ready to start making the royal icing. Traditionally, royal icing is made with raw egg whites, but you can actually use meringue powder in place of the egg whites (as we did) and still get icing that hardens beautifully with the

TIP: Once you have made the icing, I would suggest dividing it into smaller portions so that you can mix a few different colours. Note that when you are not using the icing, cover the bowl with a wet towel to prevent it from drying out.

Red Velvet Sugar Cookies Recipe
Valentine's Day heart sugar cookies are crisp on the outside, soft inside, and made festive with red and pink royal icing decorated on top.
Equipment used: measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowls, hand mixer (or stand mixer), rolling pin, Christmas cookie cutters, half sheet baking pan, wire cooling rack, piping bags with couplers, no.5 piping tip and no. 1 piping tip (or squeeze bottle).
Make ahead instructions: You will need to plan ahead and give yourself enough time when making these cookies. First, the cookies need to completely cool before icing for at least a few hours. Otherwise the icing will get too runny from the warm cookies and won't set properly. Second, the icing needs a few hours, up to a day, to completely set and harden, otherwise it can easily get smudged when storing, handling, or transporting. If adding multiple layers of icing, you need to allow the bottom layer to dry first, at least 30 minutes.

Valentine's Day Heart Sugar Cookies Recipe
When I was in 7th grade I was OBSESSED with hearts. Anything hearts. Everything hearts. Hearts, hearts, hearts. I’d draw fat bubble hearts over and over, making my mark on just about everything my magic markers could get close to. Oh, and rainbows and juicy red lips.
So its no surprise that my Smudge is now equally obsessed with the red pulsating symbols of happiness. She hasn’t quite hit the “love” obsession yet—she still has penguins and puppies inside of hearts on the brain—so in the voice of ex-NFL QB Kurt Warner, “Thank you Jesus!” that we have a few more years before teenage love-angst hits our doorstep.

So Smudge’s request for cut-out sugar cookies was no surprise. Of course she had to choose the ittiest, bittiest cookie cutter to create her love cookies and we broke out ALL of the decorating fixins. We made minis, maxis, and cookies on sticks. And then we ate. A lot. And then we made more Valentine sugar cookies that may or may not make it into our Valentine’s hands featuring these adorbs downloadable tags in one of my fave Foodie Crush fonts from Emily at Tar-Tryin.
Heart Sugar Cookies
This almond sugar cookies recipe is seriously the bomb and like my other childhood fave—my mom’s fudge—is the one Miss P (my mom) broke out anytime a cookie cutter and rolling pin were involved.
Way more flavorful than other doughs I’ve tried, this is one that you’re lucky if you have any left to actually bake cookies with. Hello, beaters! Thanks to a dose of almond flavoring, these Valentines Day cookies are a bit more unique and subbing granular white sugar with powdered sugar gives them a more delicate bite that is far from cake-like that so many other sugar cookies recipes hold dear.
This Valentine cookie recipe is easy peasy and requires only a handful of ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need to make these cut-out sugar cookies:

I sometimes frost these sweeties with a cream cheese powdered sugar old fashioned down and dirty frosting, but have lately been giving them the royal icing treatment. Not to toot my own horn, but… I have absolutely *zero talent* when it comes to piping writing on cookies and cakes. Zero zip zilch. LOL. Pen and paper, great! Piping frosting on cupcakes and flooding icing on cookies, totally manageable! But combine writing + piping, and I completely lose control of my hand.
Valentine's Day Heart Sugar Cookies
Recently, my talented assistant Stephanie came to my rescue, and helped me write on these conversation heart-inspired cookies. Because we just can’t make Valentine’s Day cookies without the fun little sayings on top!
If you aren’t familiar with conversation heart candies, they are a Valentine’s Day staple here in the U.S. They’re like little edible love notes! Pastel-colored, a little chalky-tasting, and totally iconic, conversation hearts have been around for over a century. Did you know the company that produces them comes up with a new theme each year, and creates new sayings to go along with that theme? The sayings are usually sweet or funny, but can even be sassy or sarcastic!

But you don’t need to buy a bag of conversation hearts to make today’s recipe. You just need a rolling pin, a heart-shaped cookie cutter, and a little inspiration for what to write on top (I provide some suggestions below).
