Leopard Print Birthday Cake Recipes
How cool is this ?! Leopard print both inside and out, make this surprise inside my new favourite design. I’ve made this before, and every time I do I can’t believe how easy is to achieve such a fun look that’s really a breeze to pull off. I used to look at all these surprise s and just put them in the too hard basket, mainly because I’m terrified of cutting into a , and seeing a mess of colours and awkward shapes inside. Plus when you are filming said s, the stakes are even higher. What if I have spent two days filming only to discover I messed up big time? No matter how many years you’ve been baking, nerves are hard to get a grip on sometimes.
This leopard did end up a touch more colourful than I expected though I must say. I forgot how much food colour intensifies when you bake it. Oops! It does give the whole a real 80’s vibe though. It kind of reminds me of the receptionist in Beetlejuice. You know the one with such pink hair it almost cracked the TV? Yeah, can’t say I’m too upset. I freaking love that movie!

Because this design is kind of full on, I created some instructions to go along with it. Lots of you have been asking me to do voiceovers again on my videos, and whilst I hate the sound of my own voice, I do get it. I’m going to see about possibly making two versions, so you can hear me prattle on if you so choose, or you can just listen to some smooth music if you don’t want to listen to every single instruction. Either way, I’ll keep you posted!

1. Taking 7 1/2 cups batter (a full batch of my vanilla ), divide into two small and one large bowl. Add gel food colors, blue to the largest bowl, and black and pink to the smaller ones.
2. Spray pans with nonstick spray. Apply a thin layer of blue batter to the base of each pan. Taking a piping bag with black batter, apply rings of color to the pan, four in two of the pans, and three in the last pan. Then apply a slightly thicker layer of pink rings, again using a piping bag. Top with more black. Fill in the gaps with blue batter.
3. Bake each at 330 degrees Fahrenheit for 18 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool in their pans for 10 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack. Allow to cool completely.

5. Stack the and apply blue buttercream to each layer. Apply a crumb coat to the sides and top of the , and chill in the fridge for 15 minutes.
6. Apply a thicker coat of pink buttercream to the , and scrape smooth. Taking a piping bag filled with blue buttercream, apply dollops of color in no particular pattern. Smear with a spatula, making sure you wipe the spatula clean with a paper towel after each turn. Pipe around the blue using black buttercream, again going for a random, imperfect look.A quick scroll or spin through the fall offerings of any clothing or home goods retailer this year will have you seeing spots, literally. Leopard print is back in a big way! For some of us it never left (eh, hem).
As most of you know, trends that pop up in clothing and home goods almost always make their way onto cakes. When deciding how to tackle this idea, I knew I wanted to go untraditional with colors. Pink leopard print speaks to my 90’s teenage soul in a way that little else does. By all means go with standard browns and tans if that’s your jam. I also decided to use the buttercream transfer method when making my spots to give the finished cake a little added texture and because it’s easier to fix or hide any mistakes along the way. If a spot goes wonky on you, just slide the cake back into the fridge, pop the errant spot off with the tip of a knife, and try again. Just don’t get too fussy with your design. This is one of those times when the more random, the better.

Cut tiny 1 to 2-inch squares of waxed paper. Tint about a cup each of buttercream with the soft pink, fuchsia, and burgundy gel colors. Using piping tips is entirely optional, but I feel they make the job a little easier. Fill bags with small round tips (or just cut small openings) with the burgundy and soft pink. Fill a bag with a slightly larger round tip (or just cut it) with fuchsia. Tint 2 to 3 cups of buttercream dark gray and fill a bag fitted with a large star tip.
You can make your leopard spots as large or as small as you like depending on the size of your project. I made mine .5 to 1-inch in diameter. Draw circles on the back of your waxed paper squares if you need a guide, or just freehand it like I did. Use the burgundy buttercream to pipe small lines or dots that roughly outline a small circle. Fill in the center of the circle with the fuchsia buttercream.
Set the square on a baking sheet. Repeat with the other paper squares. I made about 60 leopard spots total to cover a tall 6-inch round. Mix up the patterns you pipe with the burgundy buttercream to vary the look of the spots. Pop the tray of spots into the fridge to chill just until they’re firm to the touch, about 10 minutes.

Pipe a layer of pale pink buttercream on the backs of each spot so that they’ll sit slightly elevated and level on the sides of the cake.
Press the spots randomly onto the sides of the chilled buttercream cake. Gently smooth your finger over each spot to ensure it’s fully making contact with the cake.

Pop the cake back into the fridge until the spots are firm to the touch, about 10 minutes. Peel off the paper backings and repeat the process to fill in any spaces with more spots.

Fill in spots between dots with gray pearl sprinkles and garnish the buttercream swirls with assorted sprinkles in complementing shades of pink.

However, for cake layers, I find that the technique demonstrated in this video works best for me. I've listed some supplies and additional notes beneath the video---I hope that you enjoy it!
Make sure to watch the video tutorial further down in this post, as well as our printable how-to card. Here is just a quick rundown of our steps:

For our leopard print cake, we are working with vanilla cake batter- we divided it into three colors: plain, light brown, and darker brown (almost black). See measurements in the card below.

Time to Pipe the Lines (which will become our spots)! Pipe elongated lines of the dark batter on top of the white batter. You don't want the bands of dark batter to be very thick, but pipe them wide enough for the lighter shade of brown batter in the next step.
Light Brown Lines: Next, pipe thicker (but narrow) lines of light brown batter on top of the dark brown lines (these light lines are not as wide).
Go back in with the piping bag of dark brown batter, piping an outline around the light brown batter and on top. Enclosing the light brown batter in this way will give us the look of leopard spots later.

Using a piping bag with the tip snipped away, pipe on a layer of the white batter to cover the dark lines.
Next, still working on the same pan of batter, repeat the above steps, making one more layer of leopard print batter. (This is going to give us two layers of leopard spots in each cake layer).

If you would prefer to just have one layer of leopard spots per cake layer, that is fine also! We just wanted extra spots ;0)

In my leopard cupcake video, I layer dots of dark batter, light batter, and dark batter here and there rather than making the elongated layered lines.
