This strawberry smoothie recipe is a basic one—why complicate things unnecessarily? It makes a great starting point, and you can customize (or not!) in lots of different ways.

Creamy Apple Strawberry Smoothie

Okay, so that’s the basic recipe! Easy, right? Now for the customizing (fun!). Here are my favorite tips and hacks for making this smoothie your own:

To Refrigerate: You can place leftovers in small lidded jars, filling all the way to the brim, and store in the fridge for up to 24 hours in most cases. (If you open the smoothie and it seems discolored or “off” in any way, discard it.) Blend the smoothie again before serving.

To Freeze: Pour the leftover smoothie into ice cube trays, and freeze. Then pack the smoothie ice cubes into a zip-top bag. (You can also pour the smoothie directly into a zip-top bag and freeze it that way). Seal the bag, pressing out as much air as possible before you seal it. Freeze for up to 3 months. Serve the smoothie again by giving it a quick blend!

Quick 3 Ingredient Strawberry Banana Smoothie

Like most smoothies, you place all the ingredients in a blender, put the lid on, and blend until smooth and your desired consistency is reached. We recommend putting the liquids in first and the ice last (or in this case, the frozen raspberries, which takes the place of ice.) Pour into tall glasses and enjoy with a straw. Garnish with a fresh strawberry, if desired.

The secret to making a really good smoothie is balance—you want it to be thick but no so thick that you can't sip it through a straw, and sweet but not so sweet that it's cloying. The perfect strawberry smoothie is incredibly easy to make—just add all the ingredients to a blender and give them a whirl.

Strawberries: A strawberry smoothie can be made with fresh or frozen strawberries. Our recipe calls for frozen berries, since they make for a nice thick smoothie. If you're using fresh berries, add a few ice cubes to thicken it up. If you're using frozen strawberries, you can use either whole or pre-sliced berries. Pre-sliced are easier to blend, but most blenders can handle whole berries—just make sure to blend long enough to achieve a smooth consistency.

Liquid: Using fruit juice as the liquid in your smoothie gives it an extra fruity flavor. Our recipe calls for a combination of orange juice and cranberry-raspberry juice, but you can use any fruit juice you like or another liquid. Some excellent choices include kefir, milk, almond milk, coconut milk, vegetable juice,
