Instant Pot Ham Hock and Bean Soup is a hearty classic you can make in your pressure cooker. Great flavor from a smoky ham hock, thyme, garlic, and bay leaves. You don't even have to soak the beans if you don't want to! This pressure cooker ham hock and beans soup recipe is adapted from my mom's.
I know there's a month of Summer left, but I'm ready for all of the comfort foods of Fall! Pumpkin everything is already circulating online, so others must be feeling it too. So starts my Instant Pot Soup recipes posts!

Once again, I'm turning to my trusty Instant Pot to make this Instant Pot Ham Hock and Bean Soup. No need to have a pot boiling on the stove for a few hours, and I didn't start it early enough to use my crock pot.
Ham And Bean Soup (15 Minute Recipe)
In the electric pressure cooker this soup only takes about an hour. That includes the warm up and natural release time. Not bad! Just keep in mind that old beans will take longer to cook.
It is almost impossible to tell how old beans are, so just cook the recipe per instructions, leaving yourself a 15 to 25 minute window of time in case you need to add more time.
Also, on a warm day, I'm not heating up my kitchen. I say that all the time, but it is a huge reason why I will choose to make something like this in the Summer!

Instant Pot Ham and Bean Soup is one of the best comfort and easy meals to make. It will warm up your soul and give your body the nutrients it needs, because it is full of protein and veggies.
This recipe can be easily made with leftover holiday ham, but you don’t have to wait for leftover ham in order to enjoy it. I like to buy the cubed ham for this recipe and make it every time I crave a hearty and delicious meal.
Bean Soup (2 Methods)
This soup is made in a fraction of time when cooked on high pressure. I recommend using lots of veggies and herbs for this soup. It will make a huge difference and create a flavorful and aromatic meal.
You can use pretty much any beans available. However, I prefer to use cannellini beans as they work great, especially when cooked under pressure. They are white Italian kidney beans.
Adding the appropriate and right amount of herbs and spices to a meal can make the whole difference. Without these, the soup will still be good, but not great, more on the bland side. Adding the right mix of herbs will make the broth taste amazing and incredibly aromatic.
White Bean Soup
You can use fresh herbs as well, but I love to keep a stocked pantry of dried herbs. They blend well with this soup.
You can use the leftover ham bone for this soup. First, brown the bone in a skillet or in the pressure cooker for a couple of minutes. Then, remove it, set aside and brown the onion and ham cubes, and continue following the recipe.

After, add the ham bone back to the pot with the rest of the ingredients. Discard the bone after it is done the cookingand the meat falls off it into the soup.

This soup can be easily be made in the slow cooker as well. You simply saute the ham and vegetables first. Then, dump all the ingredients in the pot and let it slowly cook for 8 hours. You can check out the full crockpot version of this recipe in this link.
I love adding some toppings to it. Some of my favorite ways to serve it is by adding a dollop of sour cream, chopped cilantro, shredded cheddar cheese, or crispy bacon. All these toppings compliment this soup well!
A Natural Pressure Releasemeans that thepressure is releasedgradually. For a Natural Pressure Release, you click on Keep Warm, and wait 10 minutes, after which you open the valve and let any leftover pressure to release. Another option is to Turn Off/Unplug the pressure cooker, wait 10 minutes and after that open the valve.

Rinse the beans under cold water. Heat the olive oil and butter in a large soup pot over medium heat and add the onions. Cook for 5 minutes, until soft and translucent. Add the carrots, diced ham and the garlic and cook for 1 minute.

Simmer with the lid partially cracked for 3+ hours, or until it’s thickened to your desired consistency. The longer it simmers, the thicker it will become and the softer the beans will get. Stir occasionally as the beans will settle to the bottom of the pot. (PRO Tip: Consider adding the carrots during the last 40-45 minutes of cooking for a firmer consistency.)

This hearty ham and bean soup is a perfect recipe for the Slow Cooker, Instant Pot, or Stove Top. It's made with navy beans and delicious bites of ham and carrots in a thick and flavorful broth!
Ham Bone Substitutes Smoked ham shanks or ham hocks are a great alternative and also add tremendous flavor. (A shank is meatier and more preferable for this recipe.)
Salted pork and/or a few strips of uncooked smoked bacon can also be substituted. (But try for a shank or hock first.) Bacon also makes a nice optional garnish on top of this soup prior to serving.
