Asparagus Recipe Smoker
5 Star Review “What a perfect spring side dish. The grilling process makes the asparagus so beautifully green and full of flavor.” — Vicki —
Leftover asparagus makes a tasty addition to pasta dishes (like Penne Alla Vodka), risotto (like Mushroom Risotto), a French Omelette, Quinoa Salad, or Naan Pizza. It’s also scrumptious on this Scrambled Egg Toast with Asparagus.

While I’ve been known to snack on copious amounts of grilled asparagus as a healthy snack, it’s also one of my very favorite side dish recipes to serve alongside countless other mains.

Yes! You can line your grill grates with grill-safe foil or make a foil packet, similar to these Grilled Potatoes. If you’re using this post to learn how to make grilled asparagus on a gas grill, this trick may come in handy. If you prefer pan grilled asparagus, you don’t need to use foil.

It’s up to you. Soaking asparagus is a great way to clean a large batch of asparagus with minimal effort. Soaking loosens any dirt clinging to the spears or hiding under their fins. If you have a small batch to prepare, however, you can skip soaking so long as you thoroughly rinse each spear before preparing as directed.
While some recipes suggest blanching asparagus before grilling it (or parboiling it), I don’t find it to be a necessary step if you properly season the spears before cooking and manage your heat well.
Asparagus can quickly become soggy if it’s overcooked. To avoid this, keep a close eye on the asparagus spears during grilling to ensure you remove any pieces that finish early. Asparagus is cooked when it pierces easily with a fork.
Bacon Wrapped Asparagus On The Grill
Hi, I'm Erin Clarke, and I'm fearlessly dedicated to making healthy food that's affordable, easy-to-make, and best of all DELISH. I'm the author and recipe developer here at and of The Well Plated Cookbook. I adore both sweets and veggies, and I am on a mission to save you time and dishes. WELCOME!Cooking fresh asparagus on the smoker is a great accompaniment to any smoked main course. This Traeger smoked asparagus side dish comes together beautifully, topped with parmesan cheese and sliced almonds – or, just smoke and serve it with a little salt and pepper, your choice! Let’s get smoking!!!
This is one of my favorite Traeger side vegetables because it is so versatile. You can smoke asparagus anyway that you’d like. Add these toppings, or don’t!
To keep it simple, just sprinkle it with a salt (try a garlic flavored finishing salt) to enhance that natural sweetness that asparagus has. And a fresh crack of pepper.

If you’re using THIN asparagus and are concerned about it falling through the smoker grill grates, smoke them on a wire rack like this one – just put it directly on the pellet grill rack.
Nope – while you can smoke it in a pan, grilling basket or cast iron skillet, you can also smoke asparagus directly on a pellet grill. In the Sip Bite Go demonstration, you’ll see I put the asparagus on a wire baking rack, then put that directly on the grill. I think this method is easier to prepare in the kitchen and transfer to the Traeger. (one thing I love to smoke on a wire rack because it’s easier are the ingredients for smoked salsa)

Yes…most definitely. As you’ll see in the recipe video, asparagus on the pellet smoker is a super simple summer side dish or Thanksgiving food favorite that’s fit for any BBQ menu dinner.

If you are smoking asparagus at 225 degrees F, it should take about an hour. Cooking time could adjust a bit depending on how thin or thick your asparagus is.
A nice side to smoked asparagus would be smoked mac n’ cheese, smoked mashed potatoes or smoked baked potato. As a main, a nice smoked steak like ribeye, tomahawk or flank steak would pair nicely with smoked asparagus. A whole smoked chicken is another great option.
Hickory pellets, mesquite, oak or any Traeger pellet blend all provide great smoke flavors for asparagus on the smoker. When making this as a smoked Thanksgiving side dish, I usually have Traeger Turkey pellets in my smoker. See more recipes to cook for a tasty Traeger Thanksgiving.
Simple Grilled Asparagus With Lemon
Perfectly smoked asparagus should be easily pierced with a paring knife or fork. The asparagus should have a deep green color that still has some bit or crunch to it.
You do not need much to make deliciously cooked asparagus. You need nice fresh asparagus and a grill or smoker to cook them on. In addition to that, you can use any seasoning of your choice, so be creative! Just grill or smoke asparagus until they are tender when pierced with a fork. Perfectly cooked asparagus should still have a nice crunch to it when done.

It’s like being psychic! The great thing about either of the thermometers above is that I don’t have to take the food out of the oven to know the temperature.

How to use ‘em… What I do is stick the digital thermometer in steak, pork, chicken, whatever… Then put the food in the oven, on the smoker, or grill.
While the meat cooks, it reads the temperature so I know exactly what temp meat is as it’s cooking. Without having to take it out and check. It’s really difficult to overcook food when you know exactly what temp it is inside!

The maximum amount of time it takes is one hour. The exact time depends on two factors: how “crispy” you like your asparagus and what temperature do you have your smoker set to. If you’re cooking a steak at 225 degrees F it will take a little longer than if you’re cooking a steak at 250 degrees F. Here are two common temperature settings to use as a guide:

Cheesy Asparagus – Right before you pull the asparagus from the grill, sprinkle some mozzarella or parmesan cheese over the top. By the time you’re ready to grub down, the cheese will be melted.
Option 1 – Fresh asparagus will snap right where you want it to. Just hold the end of the asparagus between your thumb and pointer finger and about 1.5″ up the stalk do the same with your other hand. Gently bend the stalk and it should “snap” the hard fibrous part off.
Option 2 – Line them up on a cutting board and trim off the bottom 1-1.5″ where the hard white part meets the softer green part of the stalk.
