Korean Spicy Rice Cake And Ramen Recipe
This easy Rabokki recipe features ramen noodles and rice cakes coated in a sweet and spicy sauce to give a burst of flavor in every bite. Made in a single pan with simple ingredients, this quick and satisfying meal is the ultimate winner for the weekdays!
During my early years of living in Korea, one of my favorite memories going to Bunsikjips, which are small street food restaurants often located near the school district for the students to visit after class.

These Korean snack shops are particularly popular amongst teenagers to grab their midday pick-me-up snacks, and known for serving inexpensive street food items such as Kimbap, Soondae, and Tteokbokki.
Classic Tteokbokki: 20 Minute Korean Spicy Rice Cakes
Amongst the long list of menu items, Rabokki was always my go-to pick as it had all of my favorite things in a single dish – chewy rice cakes, fish cakes, ramen noodles, and boiled eggs.
Simply put, Rabokki is the upgraded version of Tteokbokki which I’ve shared earlier on the blog, with ramen noodles as the main highlight amongst other delicious toppings that you can add.
Best of all, all of these toppings are coated in an irresistibly delicious sauce that can be doubled as a dipping sauce for Twigim (Korean-style tempura), dumplings, or any other sides that you choose to serve the dish with.
Rabokki (korean Ramen & Rice Cakes)
Thanks to its easy preparation and addictive taste, Tteokbokki with ramen is also one of the most popular dishes to make at home as it calls for a handful of ingredients to put together.
That being said, Tteokbokki ramen is always on top of mind when it comes to the ultimate late-night snack, and the perfect dish that can be easily doubled in portion to share with your loved ones.
To create a fun activity for your friends and family, you can also set up a portable stove to cook your Rabokki in, and share a meal together around the pan.

As mentioned earlier, one of the best things about this Rabokki recipe lies in its simplicity, as it calls for a handful of ingredients that can be easily found in your kitchen!
The highlight of this recipe is the sauce and the toppings can be altered in different ways to cater to your own preference. Here is everything you’ll need for this Ramen Tteokbokki recipe:
Easy Tteokbokki (spicy Korean Rice Cakes)
Rabokki is one of the most versatile dishes in Korean cuisine, as the dish itself is a variation of another street food staple.
Based on what you have in your fridge, you can easily cater the dish to your own preference and make it your very own! Here are some popular toppings to add to your Ramen Tteokbokki:
Dumplings or mandu: instant dumplings are popular options for Rabokki which can be added directly to the dish or served on the side to dip in the spicy sauce. Twigim or tempura also make for wonderful sides.
How To Make Rabokki Ramen
Other types of noodles: although it’s the most common to serve tteokbokki with ramen, you can also use other types of noodles such as Dangmyeon (sweet potato noodles), Jjolmyeon (chewy wheat noodles), or chow mien noodles.
Depending on the type of noodle, you may need to cook the noodles separately before adding to the Rabokki, or add it directly into the sauce.
Cheese: melted cheese is an amazing addition to Rabokki which can be added right at the end for that glorious cheese pull. American sliced cheese or mozzarella cheese will both work for this recipe.

I highly recommend using a base of anchovy stock or dashi to create deeper flavors in the dish. You can also use unsalted chicken stock, or a 1:1 ratio of regular chicken stock and water instead. Like all good homemade recipes, you can tweak the spice levels to make it hotter or calm it down. You can even add extra ingredients to make it your own, such as veggies, kimchi, tofu or dumplings.
Tteokbokki is one of Laura’s FAVOURITE all time dishes. She loves anything with noodles and fish cakes. Combine these altogether and this dish is the new winner.
– Frozen is best. We use the frozen “garaetteok” style, also known as the cylinder type rice cakes. You can also buy the flat ovalette rice cakes dried or frozen, but buy frozen if you can.

– Don’t Defrost them. We throw them straight in while frozen, and find this gives you a nice chewy tteok by the end of cooking without the mushyness.
– Add them at the end. They’re instant noodles for a reason, they only take a few minutes to cook. So don’t be putting them in at the same time as your rice cakes!

– Stop cooking when sauce is still a little runny. While the noodles will help to thicken the sauce, it will continue thickening once you’ve turned off the heat. So for a saucier finish, stop cooking earlier.
Tteokbokki (korean Spicy Rice Cakes)
Rabokki (also known as rapokki / 라볶이) is a fusion of two popular South Korean street food dishes: Korean tteokbokki and ramen (known in Korean as ramyun or ramyeon).
Rabokki starts with a fiery gochujang sauce seasoned with gochugaru chilli flakes, soy sauce and garlic. Along with chewy garaetteok rice cakes and instant ramen noodles, it’s sometimes made with Korean fish cakes known as eomuk along with cabbage and spring onion.
Other Ingredients – You’ll need soy sauce, sugar and sesame oil for the sauce, along with boiled eggs (or soft boiled ramen eggs with runny yolks), spring onions / green onions and toasted sesame seeds to garnish.

We usually put the whole pot in the fridge overnight with the lid on, and will reheat the next day on the stove. We pour over around 1/2 cup of water loosen up the sauce, as the rice cakes and noodles will have soaked a lot up. Then reheat on low-medium for around 5 minutes, or until simmering nicely. We find this way softens the rice cakes nicely.
You can also reheat in the microwave, but still add a little extra water and give it a quick stir before heating it up.
Rabokki is plenty filling on its own, but if you want to round it out with extra side dishes we recommend serving with a range of light Korean banchan side dishes like pickled daikon, bean sprout salad (sujku namul) or seasoned spinach (sigeumchi namul).

If you struggle with spice, you can reduce the heat level by using less gochujang and/or gochugaru, and might also like to add a little extra stock to cool it down even further.

It’s spicy, super delicious and addictive. Let’s cook it together!
Vegan Rabokki (tteokbokki With Ramyun) Spicy Korean Rice Cake
Rabokki (라볶이) is a Korean portmanteau for Ramyeon (라면, instant ramen noodles) and Tteokbokki (떡볶이, Korean spicy rice cakes). It is a popular dish to many Koreans, particularly amongst teenagers. It gives spicy, delicious and addictive flavor and is quite a filling food at a relatively cheap price. Probably that’s why it is popular.
I also prefer rabokki over tteokbokki as it often includes more interesting and delicious additional ingredients such as boiled eggs, ramen noodles, dumplings and so on, which aren’t normally added in tteokbokki.
The standard ingredients that go into rabokki are Korean rice cakes, ramen noodles, Korean fish cakes, cabbage leaves, spicy gochujang sauce and hard boiled eggs (to top it up).

Also, some people might choose to add chewy noodles (jjolmyeon, 쫄면) instead of ramen noodles. Some people even add Korean ramen seasoning powder in addition to the spicy gochujang sauce.
Another ingredient you could add is sliced cheese. I forgot to add it this time, but I try to add it if I can.
1. Put the water (3 cups) in a medium pot and add the dried kelp and anchovies. Boil it for 10 mins uncovered on medium heat. Take out (& discard) the kelp and continue boiling for a further 10 mins. Take out the anchovy. Sieve through the boiled broth over damp cheese/linen cloth to remove small particles from the kelp and anchovies. (If you don’t mind these particles, you can
