Goulash Recipe Velveeta Cheese

Goulash Recipe Velveeta Cheese

This classic American Goulash is ground beef simmered in a tomato sauce with elbow macaroni, it’s one pot and the entire family will love it! This is comfort food to the max. If you are looking for a slow cooker version, try this slumgullion recipe (also another name for this dish!)

I am obsessed with American Goulash. American goulash was never something that I ate growing up as a kid. My parents aren’t huge pasta eaters, meaning that this is something that my mother wouldn’thave made for us. The only pasta I can recall would be spaghetti and meatballs and the occasional tuna casserole. Which reminds me, I am making tuna casserole this winter, I swear. It’s happening. But American goulash? Not in my childhood recipe repertoire.

Easy

American goulash is called many, many names and I have made an oven version of it using whole wheat pasta – American Chop Suey. A lot of people have called my Beef & Macaroni soup goulash – but I’m afraid it ain’tso.

I DID grow up eating my ClassicBeef & Tomato Macaroni Soupand while they are close in taste, they are far from the same dish. (make sure you try that soup, it’s one of the most popular recipes on my website and it’s amazing, no word of a lie!)

As you can see, the goulash is thicker, like a creamy casserole and has cheese. Not only that, red peppers can make an appearance and I use a can of tomato soup in the American Goulash as well. The taste profiles are similar, for sure, but other than than they are as different as night and day.

Oh my word, that’s a miracle. My daughter, while getting much better, is still a selective eater, however she loves my beef and macaroni soup.

She ate this like a starving wolf. Thank the gods. Now Mike I knew would love this. He ate hamburger casseroles growing up and they are one of his favourite meals. I am not sure what we call American Goulash here in Canada, but I suspect it is probably just ” Hamburger Casserole.”

It really is so darn good and is the perfect meal for winter. It’s comfort food to the max, with the beef, the pasta and the cheese. It’s also a large enough recipe that our family of four ate it for supper and there was about 3 lunch servings left the next day.

You could imagine how irritatedmy daughter was when she found out that the rest of us accidentally ate it all on her. Oooops. I plead carb coma.

Hungarian goulash is more like a soup or stew and uses chunks of beef, various vegetables and seasoned with onion and paprika.

American goulash is typically tomato based and full of macaroni, ground beef, uses seasonings like basil, oregano, thyme, and rosemary, and often includes cheese. American goulash is also called American chop suey or slumgullion.

I’m all about simple these days and this recipe is just that! It doesn’t take long to throw this easy cheesy goulash together, but plan ahead because it does have to simmer for about 45-50 minutes total.

MEAT + SAUCE. Begin by sautéing beef/hamburger in a skillet over medium-high heat until cooked, and then drain. Add the garlic and sauté for about 5 minutes. Add water, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, Italian seasoning, bay leaves, soy sauce, and seasoned salt.

SIMMER. Stir this well; cover and allow to simmer for about 15-20 minutes. Add the uncooked elbow macaroni to skillet, stir well, then return the lid and simmer for about 30 minutes.

CHEESE. Once 30 minutes is up and the noodles are all cooked, turn off the heat, and remove the bay leaves. Add 1 cup of cheddar cheese right before serving, which will make it even more irresistible.

Make ahead of time. Make this easy goulash recipe ahead of time. Simply follow the recipe directions, cover, and store in the fridge until you’re ready to use.

STORE. Goulash can reheat well, but it needs to be stored properly. Be sure to place in an air-tight container and put in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat by using the microwave.

FREEZE. Goulash can be made ahead time and frozen for up to 3 months. Place leftover goulash in a freezer safe dish and cover tightly with foil.

Reheat. If you plan to store the dish for more than a day the best place to keep it is in the freezer. When you’re ready to eat this delicious dish take it out of the fridge or freezer. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F, cover dish with foil, and heat until it is the desired temperature.

We also recommend placing this in a freezer-safe Ziploc bag and placing in the freezer. When you’re ready to eat it remove from the freezer, thaw, and heat in a microwave, covered in an oven, or on the stove top in a skillet until it reaches your desired temperature.

You can make goulash with any ground meat. I prefer ground beef, but ground sausage, turkey, or even chicken work just as well. Keep in mind the flavors will vary slightly.

No need! You will add the dry pasta directly to the skillet with the other ingredients and simmer them all together until the pasta is cooked.
