Safety Warning: This recipe is for soapmakers who have a basic knowledge of the soapmaking process and know the correct safety procedures to use when handling lye. The lactic acid in milk has a tendency to burn and turn orange in goat milk soap. The lower you can keep the temperature of your lye solution, the lighter your soap will turn out. To keep the temperature of your milk lye solution down, you can freeze your goat milk. Use ice trays to freeze (easy way) or hack your milk into pieces using a knife and hammer (not easy way, but seems to be my preference every time – ha!).

Step 2 – In a well-ventilated area, sprinkle the sodium hydroxide into your milk while stirring. The sodium hydroxide will start to melt the frozen goat milk. Stir until dissolved and put to the side to cool down. To help keep your lye solution even cooler, place your milk container in an ice bath while stirring in the lye.
Step 7 – Divide the mixture into two containers. 1/3 of the mixture into one container and 2/3 into another container. You can just eyeball it.
Step 10 – Start spooning on the uncolored soap layer. You’ll have to turn your mold to the flat position, but the purple layer should be nice and thick. Pour on the rest of the uncolored soap to fill the mold.

Step 11 – You can use a coat hanger or swirling tool from Bramble Berry to swirl the layers a bit. Simply bend it to fit your mold and pull it up and down, running the length of the mold.
Let sit for 24 hours to saponify and harden. Remove after 48 hours in the mold (this is a softer recipes, but cures out rock-hard). Let cure for 4 weeks.

Not long after my children went gluten free for celiac disease, they came down with chicken pox. It sounds silly, but I couldn’t stop dwelling on the sad fact that I couldn’t use the traditional oatmeal baths and lotions that are so helpful for itchy skin afflictions.
I determined I’d make my own skin-soothing oatmeal & honey soap free of gluten, dairy, and soy. (My son was also allergic to wheat, milk, and soy.) This recipe is the product of that quest!

Where to buy supplies: You can buy the oils needed for this recipe at local health or grocery stores. Oats (we use gluten free), honey, and distilled water can be found at most grocery stores. I like Essential Depot’s food grade lye from Amazon.com.
Use a Scale, Not Measuring Cups, to Make Soap All soap ingredients should be weighed with a digital scale. You must use an exact ratio of oils and lye. Measuring cups just aren’t accurate enough and if you use them you may end up with a soap that’s too crumbly, or too soft.
To make ground oats: Just take regular rolled or whole oats (I use Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Oats) and grind them in a small coffee grinder.

Tips for making oatmeal honey soap: Soaps containing honey do not need to be heavily insulated or covered, because the natural sugars in honey makes the soap warmer than usual. If you see a crack forming across the top, that means the soap is getting too hot in the mold. If that happens, move the mold to a cooler place or in front of a box fan for several hours to help.
